The Socceroos

The Australian national team (The Socceroos) played their first competitive game on a tour to New Zealand in 1922. Despite losing the first match 3-1 they went on the win 9 of the 14 games played.

The socceroos hold the record for the biggest win in international football Australia 31 - 0 American Samoa in 2001, with Archie Thompson scoring 13 goals.

Australia did not enter qualification for the world cup untill 1966 and qualified for the finals for the first time in 1974, after coming through a qualification process that merged the Oceania and Asia confederations. In their first World Cup finals in Germany, the Socceroos were drawn into Group 1 with West Germany, East Germany and Chile. They lost 2-0 to East Germany, 3-0 to West Germany and drew 0-0 with Chile.

Despite some near misses in the 1990's, socceroos supporters had to wait until 2006 to cheer the team again in a World Cup finals, the final qualification game saw the team go through after a penalty shoot-out with Uruguay.

Guus Hiddink's socceroos a full 32 years after their first appearance, were back in Germany and back in the World Cup.

tim cahill australia goal celebrationThe draw gave the Socceroos: Brazil (champions), Croatia and Japan. The first game against Japan was looking like a 1-0 defeat, until Tim Cahill equalized in the 84th and put Australia ahead in th 89th, John Aloisi scored a 3rd to give the Aussie's their first win in the World Cup finals. The second game, against Brazil ended in a 2-0 defeat.

In the 3rd game against Croatia, the socceroos needed to avoid defeat to qualifiy for the second round. The game finished 2-2, but will be remembered for Englands referee Graham Poll showing Croatia's Josep Simunic Three Yellow Cards.

In the second round the Socceroos gave a good acount of themselves against Italy and it took a 95th minute penalty to seperate the teams, Australia went home and Italy went on to World Cup Glory.

The South Africa World Cup 2010 will be the Socceroos first outside Germany, and sees them drawn in Group D with Germany, Serbia and Ghana.
